The first ever concealer I remember buying was the YSL Touché Eclat which came in only one shade that was apparently universal. Thank goodness we’ve moved on and there is now a shade for every skin tone. As a fresh faced 22-year-old it got thrown to the bottom of my bag never to be used.
When I entered my 30s concealer became my best friend and this remains the case. It gives me light in areas most needed, covers darkness under my eyes after a poor night’s sleep and conceals red patches around my nose. It’s magic!!!
Contrary to assumptions often made of the time requirement, a make-up routine for a working day should not take any longer than 10 – 15 mins. Ladies, it’s true!!! With the right products the application shouldn’t take long. Find your tools, prep your skin, apply make-up and off you go. Hello world!
What is a concealer and how do I use it?
It’s a “magic wonder product” used to colour-correct skin tone and conceal imperfections, like a foundation only thicker. Concealer is usually applied after your foundation. It can hide dark circles, blemishes, lighten dark areas and create a more even tone.
Are there different types of concealers available?
There are many shades and types available. You can choose from liquid, cream, stick, cream to powder and colour correcting concealer. You can find satin, radiant, shimmer or matte finish liquid concealers.
Matte versions last slightly longer than a satin finish. If you are prone to dry skin opt for a satin finish as it will look more natural. To use under your eyes the best option is a radiant shimmer as it will highlight them.
Stick concealer is a full-coverage product that works well for very dark under eye circles. You only need a dot of the product to blend and conceal. This type of product will last a long time. Bonus!
Cream versions are my preference. They come in small pots or palettes and provide a medium to full coverage. They tend to last longer than liquid because of the thicker texture and opaque pigments. Great for normal, dry or sensitive skin.
Cream to powder versions is usually sold as powder compact/concealer. It’s best applied with a sponge. Provides light to medium coverage.
Colour correcting palette is always handy to have in your make-up kit if you suffer with skin tone problems like blue circles under the eyes or persistent redness. It’s best to apply under your foundation to neutralise its unnatural colour. There are various colour correcting concealers. Pale yellow can accentuate the eyebrow arch and cheekbones, pink neutralises a blue sheen on light skin and can brighten extremely pale skin. If you suffer with rosacea a green colour is best suited.
Always choose two shades lighter than your foundation.
Use sparingly, I can make my concealer last a good couple of months.
I always like to have a liquid and cream concealer on hand as it’s good to mix up your make up routine.
