Taking Care Of Your Skin Is More Important Than Covering It Up!

We can’t stay young forever, but we can improve the longevity of our skin!

As we age it gets harder to keep our skin looking supple and youthful.  I am starting to notice that the skin on my neck and knees is changing.  Why do our knees have to change…  why can’t the skin on our butt change instead? It’s so unfair!

The natural process of aging causes our skin to lose elasticity, become thinner, develop sunspots and much more but thankfully there are ways to help our skin stay fresh-looking for longer but effort is needed.  Nothing in life comes easy!

The most obvious one is to protect our skin from the sun and AVOID using sunbeds.  I have the occasional spray tan in a tanning shop where I live, and I am always amazed at how busy it is, predominately with the young twentysomethings.  The mum inside me sometimes tries to warn younger people of using them but I think it falls on deaf ears. If I could go back in time I would tell my younger self to stop sunbathing.

So, protecting our skin from the sun will lessen the risk of age spots and wrinkling, especially the hands, neck and chest areas.  We can’t take back the damage from years prior but we can certainly stop the further damage happening now.

We all know cardio is a brilliant way to keep fit however, weight training is a great way to build muscle mass that can also help decrease the appearance of loose skin. That’s what we want ladies!   And maintaining a stable weight also helps decrease signs of ageing. I know how hard it can be to achieve and sustain great results, my weight fluctuates on a yearly basis especially around Christmas time, but I never give up.

Wearing sunscreen, avoiding sunbeds and exercising will make an enormous difference to your skin.

In addition, these are some of the other things I do to help slow the aging process and improve the longevity of my skin

Body Exfoliation

It’s not radical but it sometimes helps to be reminded that regular exfoliation in our 40’s is a must as it;

  • helps the body increase cell turnover
  • allows the skin to absorb moisturiser more easily
  • can help unclog pores and
  • will leave your skin looking fresh and smooth.

Once or twice a week in the shower really doesn’t take long.

Organic shop Brazilian Coffee & Sugar scrub £6.17

This is my favourite body scrub.  I discovered it at a supermarket in Italy years back and I have never wanted to switch.  An inexpensive product that does exactly what it is supposed to and nothing more.

Retinol for your body

I have noticed that some brands are starting to include body lotions with age-busting retinol included.  This power-house ingredient can really help with wrinkling of the skin and rejuvenation.  This is an investment product.

Grapeseed oil

I love using this type of oil so much!!!  Grapeseed oil comes from the pressed seeds of grapes and the oil can help improve the skin’s elastically and softness.  I can totally vouch for that!  I tend to slather this on after a long soak in the bath before bed resulting in baby soft skin in the morning once or twice a week.  It truly makes a difference.

Chest wrinkle pads – Anti-wrinkle décolletage pads

I have chest wrinkles that I absolutely can’t stand.  They first started to appear in my late 20s, most likely the result of sunbathing with zero factor sun oil. I was so foolish!

I discovered chest wrinkle pads in my late 30s and thought I’d give it a go. OMG, gamechanger!  I tend to sleep on my side which means that if you do suffer with a wrinkly chest they will worsen.

I now wake up every morning with a smoother chest and no lines and as a result are now a fixture in my routine.  There are many available at different prices.  I buy the cheapest one at £7.99 and lasts me for a couple of months before they lose their adhesiveness.
