To Spray Or Not To Spray?

Everything you need to know about Setting Sprays

Personally, I think radiant skin exude healthiness and happiness.  If there is a product out there that can help achieve this look,  it’s a find that needs to be shared.

I believe setting sprays make a difference to your complexion with little or no extra effort and provides the finishing touch to any look.

I’ve detailed below all you need to know about setting sprays and finished off with my current top three which I shall keep updating as and when I find new ones to recommend.

Why did I start using a setting spray?

I don’t know many women in my age bracket that use a setting spray… in fact I think it’s just me. Five or so years ago I realised my make-up routine needed to change. What had been working in my 20’s and 30’s wasn’t achieving the same results. On reflection this makes sense, my skin was changing so I started watching YouTube make up tutorials to see what I could learn.

My favourite make-up artists, Eman and Painted by Spencer must be around 10 – 15 years younger than me and still have gorgeous plump skin! Their age means they don’t need to use products in the way I do but it doesn’t make their guidance any less valuable. In fact quite the opposite, as make-up professionals it’s their tips and tricks that we can all learn from.

How has it come about?

Originally used for the entertainment industry, setting sprays were developed to limit make up application for actors. And now setting sprays are available for ‘ordinary’ people who don’t have an army of trained make-up artists.

What is a make-up setting Spray?

It is like a fixing spray, a light mist to spritz over your face once your make up application is complete. The promise, to prolong your make up and help preserve application through heat, sweat and physical exertion. Sounds pretty good to me!

What are the benefits of using one?

There are a variety of settings sprays out there. I tend to go for hydrating, illuminating or ones that create a dewy finish. You can also go for a matte look spray which is great for women with oily skin. If you have dry skin or work in an environment which is making your skin dry then go for hydrating option. This type of product is handy to keep in your handbag. If you feel you need an extra boost of hydration during the day, get this little beauty out and spray, spray, spray.

Are setting sprays bad for your skin?

If you follow the instructions for usage and pay attention to the ingredients then no, they aren’t any different to other make-up products. And actually a lot of setting sprays now have skin loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, green tea or aloe water. Basically, find a formula that works for you.

No.1 – Cover FX Dewy Finish Setting Spray £23.90

This does exactly what the name suggests. This was my first setting spray I used and it’s still my number one. It’s weightless, quick drying and leaves you with a glowing dewy look. I use it to top-up my make up during the day and sometimes when I’m in need of an extra boost of dewiness.

No.2 – Cover FX Illuminating Setting Spray £23.00

Same brand, this is for the real “Goddess” look. It’s an illuminating all over highlighter spray. I can’t ask for anything more as it is everything I’m after.

No.3 – Yves Saint LaurentTop Secrets Glow Perfecting Mist £28.00

This is a recent purchase and it doesn’t disappointment. It’s hydrating, provides the luminous look I love and the added ingredient of hyaluronic acid always appeals to me.

I have tried a couple of the cheaper brands but I’m yet to find one that is good enough to recommend. When they don’t work well they leave your skin feeling really sticky – that’s not want I’m after!
