Why are primers an essential part of your make up routine?
Make up brands like Smashbox and Urban Decay first introduced Primers back in the noughties. As a young woman in my 20s I didn’t really buy into it. I had pretty good skin (although I didn’t think so at the time) and I didn’t really layer on lots of make-up. My make up routine was simple back then.
As we age, we naturally lose our glow, it happens to us all. The big difference today is the broad range of products available to make our skin look super healthy and luminous.
What is a primer?
It’s a product you apply right after your skincare routine. A primer preps your skin to help create an ideal canvas for whatever make up product comes next.
Why is it more necessary for women over 40?
At this age, our skin can become very dry which then can make fine lines and wrinkles appear more noticeable. To achieve a fresher glowy look we have the option to use an illuminating or hydrating primer.
You can also use a blurring or mattifying primer. Blurring can be used to help minimise pores and mattifying will help give a smoother look.
There are so many primers on the market. Which brand should I opt for?
I hear you!!! I felt the same. I have tried quite a few from the brands I trust as well from other companies and below I’ve recommend my current top three.
No.1 – Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer £39.00
OMG, I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m in love with this product. Because I am! I have recommended this to many women and the feedback has always been “this is a game changer”. It gives you such a beautiful glow and is very natural. I loathe saying “MUST HAVE” but this one really is. I use when I want to amplify my look – think nights out or lunch dates.
No.2 – Becca Back Lighting Primer £28.00
This product is my weekday primer. It gives you a light luminous glow and sits perfectly under foundation. It completely brightens your skin which we need ladies.
No.3 Mac Strobe Cream Primer £26.00
This is a classic. I used this back in the day and I still go back to it. This can smooth and highlight obscuring any signs of fatigue on your skin. It’s a skin pick me up. Use it under your foundation or mix with your foundation.
