Jumpsuits and Playsuits
I love researching the history of clothes and browsing through historic images. You realise quickly that fashion today has been inspired from items many decades ago. The 20 year cycle of fashion is sooo true! I wished I’d kept my jumpsuits from the 90s – a couple of them from Topshop were favourites and would have looked good today.
Jumpsuits were originally a workwear staple for the military with pilots, mechanics and even astronauts wearing coveralls or boilersuits to protect their clothing. The jumpsuit was first featured on the catwalk in 1964 and remains super fashionable. They were featured on the spring summer catwalk not least by MaxMara and Stella Macartney.
One of the reasons I love a jumpsuit is that it’s a one piece. We don’t always have time to prepare a stylish outfit but the jumpsuit offers us ladies a “no-stress throw it on” piece that can still look utterly gorgeous! Dressed up or down with heels or trainers, this is a garment that will make you look fresh.
I bet you’re thinking “could I wear one? I don’t have the right shape…” Let me tell you there is a jumpsuit to suit every body shape.
If you are:
– lucky enough to have an hourglass shape the jumpsuit is the one piece that you will rock. It will flatter your waist and highlight your desirable shape
– slim and would like to create curves, go for jumpsuits that have volume like gathering, pleat or ruching. Wide leg or straight fitting options work brilliantly on your figure and always wear a belt to define your waist.
– a pear shape look for jumpsuits that create a balance between our shoulders and hips. Wide leg options will be our best friend. Wide necks or off shoulder are perfect to balance our shape.
The jumpsuit and playsuit are wardrobe winners and below is a selection of some of the best ones out there right now.
